What is PP fabric? What is TPO fabric? Are they same? All you need to know about PP and TPO fabric, the green fabric for sustainability solution of PVC fabric

PP tarpaulin, also known as TPO tarpaulin or recyclable tarpaulin, its eco friendly pvc fabric alternative, is a high-tech, high-performance fabric made from a new material. PP tarpaulin consists of three layers: a base cloth layer made of 100% PP/TPO, serving as the fabric’s basic structure and providing low shrinkage and high strength; two layers coated with PP coating, the base fabric of which is high-strength, dense polypropylene filaments (commonly 500d and 1000d for woven and warp-knitted fabrics, available in black and white), and a high-performance PP extrusion coating on both sides of the base fabric to enhance durability and outdoor performance. It features high strength, waterproofing, windproofing, scratch and abrasion resistance, UV resistance, folding flex cracking resistance, and reusability. Because both the PP/TPO base and coating are 100% virgin material PP/TPO, this material is considered a new type of environmentally friendly material and a sustainable alternative to PVC tarpaulins. Its also having a name that PVC free fabric.

Compared to traditional PVC tarpaulins, it is much lighter, typically weighing only 50% to 60% of PVC tarpaulins. Furthermore, PP itself is odorless, non-toxic, PFAS Free, BPA Free, Phthalates Free and contains no additional additives, making it safe for direct contact with the human body without harm. Combined with its recyclability and lightweight advantages, we can consider this product the future direction for industrial fabrics.

Sustainability has become a central focus for manufacturers. Modern PP woven fabrics leverage recycled polypropylene fibers, energy-efficient production methods, and biodegradable additives without compromising performance. Advanced coatings enhance UV resistance, fire retardancy, and waterproofing, enabling long-lasting products suitable for outdoor and industrial applications. Additionally, low-smoke Hot Air and Hot Wedge welding technologies improve safety for workers during fabrication. These innovations demonstrate that polypropylene fabrics can meet industrial demands while supporting environmental stewardship.

Dejia is the world’s leading manufacturer for PP/TPO coated fabric with key technology to get high adhesion more than 100N/5cm.

Why can PP TPO tarpaulin fabric be recycled while PVC tarpaulin fabric cannot?

Because PP TPO tarpaulin fabric are made of a single virgin material: both the base fabric and the coating are PP. Therefore, they can be crushed, granulated, and reused or used to manufacture other products, such as PP plastic pallets, manhole covers, and car fenders. PVC tarpaulin fabric, has a polyester base fabric and a PVC coating. The base fabric and coating need to be separated before they can be recycled, and this separation process is more difficult and costly.

How are PP/TPO fabrics manufactured?

DEJIA PP tarpaulins are manufactured in a one-stop process at the DEJIA factory. The production of PP/TPO tarpaulins involves first weaving the base fabric, then applying a coating to its surface. Before coating, we need to dry the PP pellets to ensure that the humidity and performance meet the coating requirements. Then, we use an automatic feeding system to heat and pressurize them to a molten state.  The base cloths go through more than hundreds of sets of rollers precisely moving across the equipment, performing processes such as heating, coating, embossing, cooling, and winding. DEJIA possesses the world’s most advanced weaving machines for PP base fabric production. Cause PP base fabric has a higher elongation rate than ordinary polyester base fabric, it requires even higher precision control. DEJIA ensures that the production process is free flying yarn, defects, and has uniform tension, which is crucial for the subsequent coating process. For the coating, DEJIA employs the most advanced extrusion coating technology, combined with a high-precision control panel from Scantech of France. This allows for precise control of temperature and tension during coating, coating thickness, and the bonding accuracy between the base fabric and the PP coating, ensuring perfect peel strength and performance for every square meter.

What is the advantages of PP fabric, why choose DEJIA PP fabric, and what are the applications of PP fabric?

In markets that prioritize environmental protection and sustainable development, people are more concerned about the durability and environmental impact of materials, as well as their recyclability and reusability. Based on these characteristics, PP tarpaulins are gradually becoming the preferred choice in some markets, second only to PVC tarpaulins.

Compared to traditional tarpaulins, the main advantages of PP/TPO tarpaulins are:

  1. Green, alternative, recyclable, and sustainable; used fabric can be recycled and reused to make recycled products such as plastic pallets.
  2. Simple composition, non-toxic and harmless, safe for direct contact with humans and food grade drinking water.
  3. High strength and good weather resistance.
  4. Good UV resistance, typically lasting 3-5 years or more. 5. Achieves 2500 hours of sun resistance in QUV testing in the laboratory.
  5. Big range of specifications to choose from.
  6. Dejia GreenFab PP/TPO range product maximum size reaches 3.5 meters, and the roll-up length can reach 1000 meters, ensuring minimal loss during use.
  7. Lightweight, weighing only 50% to 60% of traditional tarpaulins, significantly improving the user experience by reducing worker workload and post-production weight.
  8. Meets flame retardant requirements such as B1, M2, and NFPA701.
  9. Very high Flex cracking resistance 400,000+, significantly extending the tarpaulin’s reusability and weather resistance, especially in windy areas.

How the PP/TPO fabric welded?

Normally the PP/TPO fabric can be welded by hot air or hot wedge, Common welding equipment like Leister Variant, Twinny T7, Miller Weldmaster.

Can PP/TPO fabric be printed and used for PP flex banner fabric? What is suitable printing method?

Currently, most printing on PP fabric uses screen printing. UV printing or solvent printing is still unstable or under development. Dejia is working on this, and we believe that printable PP fabric will soon be available for mass production.

How to Choose PP Fabric with Different Weights and Based on different Application?

First, choose based on weight. Generally speaking, to achieve the same thickness, performance, and strength, PP/TPO fabrics have a lower weight. For example, 600/610 g/m² PVC is commonly used as tarpaulin, with a thickness of around 0.5mm. Its tensile strength is approximately 2600 N/5cm in the weft direction and 2500 N/5cm in the warp direction, while its tear strength is approximately 270 N/5cm in the warp direction and 250 N/5cm in the weft direction. For the same thickness and performance, PP fabric only needs 350 to 360 g/m². In other aspects, such as UV resistance and colorfastness, PP fabric is superior to PVC fabric.

Second, choose based on application. For example, for truck side curtains, PVC is usually 900 g/m² Panama weave, while PP with 600 g/m² Panama weave would suffice. For example, for thin tank liner fabric, 600 to 750 g/m² PVC fabric is typically chosen, while around 400 g/m² PP fabric is sufficient.
